Makerhoods

A hackerspace in every city is just the beginning: Makerhoods are creative communities located near hackerspaces to include hackerquarters living, hackademy schooling, startupspace incubators for working, funcommercial zones for unorthodox storefronts and uncommercial zones for public benefit non-businesses.

Makerhood Space Ingredients

Here are some of the major starting points to creating your makerhood.

Hackerspaces: Community For Makers

Hackerspaces are community spaces for all arts and all technologies where all are welcome all the time all for free all over the world! There are over 500 hackerspaces worldwide and more are being founded and expanded all the time! Hackerspaces.org: Find Your Local Hackerspace: Hackerspaces.org is the mothership for hacker spaces and star bases across the world. If you're outside the Bay Area, this is your starting point to find your local hackerspace or find instructions and allies to start your own.

Hackerquarters: Housing For Makers

Do you want to live with other makers near your hackerspace? Do you want to live in an entire makerhood of such hackerquarters so that you walk down your streets and pass fellow makers every day? You should found a hackerquarters near your space or join a waiting list for one that exists already!

Hackademies: School For Makers

Do you want to go to a school that works like hackerspaces do? Do you go to a school that could incorporate hackerspace creativity in some form? There are many options for making schools more creative and entrepreneurial so that kids can grow up being mentored instead of babysat.

Young Makers is an initiative to engage mentors with Young Makers.
Hack The Future is a mentoring event cofounded by Code Hero creator Alex Peake

Funcommercial Zones

There are many more retail store-style businesses than the competitive real estate market currently allows for. To facilitate experimentation and creativity amongst entrepreneurs, funcommercial zones allow a rotating range of business types to be prototyped.

Uncommercial Zones

There are all kinds of things possible when you set up something that looks like a storefront but which has absolutely zero commercial motive or money exchange involved. Burning Man theme camps are a good source of inspiration for uncommercial zone projects.

Think of TechShop like a fitness club, but with tools and equipment instead of exercise equipment. It is sort of like a Kinko's for makers, or a Xerox PARC for the rest of us. TechShop is designed for everyone, regardless of their skill level.

Popuphood Oakland

Popuphood is defining a local approach to rethinking retail and its role as a strategic tool for revitalization.  By aligning their goals of neighborhood renewal with strategic partnerships in workforce and business development they leverage the larger business, government and tech sectors to connect micro-businesses to a larger shared economy of mutual success in a down economy.  Through these partnerships they have expanded their capacity to provide up to 6 months free rent to each of the retailers as well as tools, services, products, resources to support these interim businesses to sign a long term lease. The success of popuphood in Old Oakland demonstrates that today’s micro-entrepreneurs are having a macro economic impact.  Popuphood provides a platform for developers and building owners to look at the triple bottom line and to assess their role as partners in the economic health of the broader community.  Acting as a bridge for government agencies to invest in people they focus on the genius of hyper-local creative and community capital for solutions with global reach.

It is the largest do-it-yourself industrial art space in the Bay Area with over 40 different art groups and craftsmen in the shop.NIMBY not only offers space to create, but supports its  artists with resources, assistance in sourcing re-purposed material, as well as logistical and technical guidance.  This supportive culture shared by all members of the NIMBY community is at the root of the amazing art that emerges from its doors. NIMBY is the hub for creativity that boggles the mind and fosters community values that encourage collaboration and
innovation.

Over the years, the concept of our community has brought together talented and diverse local artists who have created an impressive body of work.  NIMBY has been the largest workspace/gallery of its kind in the City of Oakland and continues to provide a workspace, storage and display area - a one-stop shop for big, innovative art. There are no sidelines at NIMBY.  It’s all hands on deck!
